Tournament Day Report
On Sunday 28th February, we held a mini tennis tournament day for a selection of our current red, orange and green players from our Primary School and Cleeve Sports Centre Lessons.
11 players entered our Mini Red Tournament including defending champion Sophie Green and first-timers, Hannah Palmer, Skyla Turbard & Charlie Chattell. Brothers Jake & Jojo Dee, Jack Hunn, Hector Summers-Kretching, Joshua Burley, Jonny Wilks & Ben Vest completed the competitive line-up.
The players were drawn into 2 groups and matches were played to 5. 5-3 was a popular scoreline early on. As the matches progressed the quality of tennis did so too. Some fantastic exchanges and superb winners, in particular some great aces were highlights in an eventful start to the day.
Group one had Sophie come up against Hannah. Sophie had won all 4 matches and Hannah was only 3 points behind. Hannah put in a great performance to win 5-2. Both girls ended with 22 points but Hannah topped the group as she had beat Sophie. A big mention to JoJo who had been suffering with illness and had not attended a lesson in a month.
In group 2, Charlie was victorious in all 4 matches and topped the group. Jack came out on top of another 5-3 victory against Hector to secure second place.
The Semi-finals, Hannah vs Jack & Charlie vs Sophie. Both were fiercely competitive. All players were playing to their potential and both games were hard to predict. Hannah edged out Jack to claim a spot in the final. Sophie set-up a rematch after narrowly beating Charlie in a battle of the lefties.
Sophie was looking to get revenge for losing to Hannah in the group stage. She won the toss and chose her lucky end. Some strong serving along and that extra experience of playing in her third tournament meant Sophie was the champion. Hannah should be very proud of her result as it was her first tournament. Hannah will be moving into Sophie's lesson which should develop their rivalry.
8 players entered the mini orange tournament. It had been over half a year since our last tournament for orange. Thomas Vest, Oliver Shelton and Joseph Parkes had all played in tournaments before. Making a first time appearance were Bexley Turbard, Sam Crawforth, Mackenzie Parker, Francois Mathis and Edward Keen.
The boys were separated into 2 groups and played tie break matches. Thomas, Bexley, Sam and Oliver were in group 1, with Mackenzie, Francois, Edward and Joseph battling out in group 2.
Conditions were cold and breezy which usually cause difficulty but the boys entertained the frozen spectators with some fantastic rallies. As the matches progressed, all the boys became more consistent with their serves and this generated long rallies. Oliver won all 3 of his matches to top group 1 with, Thomas second. Joseph also managed to win all 3 matches to top group 2 and Mackenzie came second.
Onto the semi-finals, Oliver proved to much for Mackenzie and progressed to the final where he would meet Thomas in a repeat of their group game. Thomas managed to edge out Joseph after a close start.
Thomas battled in every point against Oliver and he deserves great praise for persevering to the last point. Unfortunately for Thomas, his efforts could not get the better of Oliver who was very professional in his performance.
All the entrants showed brilliant sportsmanship and umpired very well.
Oliver Burton, Jack Woods, Matthew Murphy & James Platt all competed in a best of 3 short set tournament. Some grueling games including a tie break deciding victory for Matthew against Jack were present throughout. James battled and put in a impressive performance to claim top spot and be champion. The tournament was played in great spirit which was brilliant to see (and can be seen in the photo).
Well done to all players who participated. A big part of these tournaments is enabling the coaches to watch and analyse what areas each child needs help on. We will be working on these areas in their next lessons.
